A Walk To RememberIn 1958, Beaufort, North Carolina, which is located on the coast near MoreheadCity, was a place like many other small southern towns. It was the kind ofplace where the humidity rose so high in the summer that walking out to get themail made a person feel as if he needed a shower, and kids walked aroundbarefoot from April through October beneath oak trees draped in Spanish moss. People waved from their cars whenever they saw someone on the streetwhether they knew him or not, and the air smelled of pine, salt, and sea, a scentunique to the Carolinas. For many of the people there, fishing in the PamlicoSound or crabbing in the Neuse River was a way of life, and boats weremoored wherever you saw the Intracoastal Waterway. Only three channelscame in on the television, though television was never important to those of uswho grew up there. Instead our lives were centered around the churches, ofwhich there were eighteen within the town limits alone. They went by nameslike the Fellowship Hall Christian Church, the Church of the Forgiven People, the Church of Sunday Atonement, and then, of course, there were the Baptistchurches. When I was growing up, it was far and away the most populardenomination around, and there were Baptist churches on practically everycorner of town, though each considered itself superior to the others. There wereBaptist churches of every type—Freewill Baptists, Southern Baptists, Congregational Baptists, Missionary Baptists, Indep....
Is it possible, I wonder, for a man to truly change? Or do character
and habit form the immovable boundaries of our lives?
It is mid-October 2003, and I ponder these questions as I watch a
moth flail wildly against the porch light. I’m alone outside. Jane, my
wife, is sleeping upstairs and she didn’t stir when I slipped out of bed.
It is late; midnight has come and gone, and there’s a crispness in the
air that holds the promise of an early winter. I’m wearing a heavy
cotton robe, and though I imagined it would be thick enough to keep
the chill at bay, I notice that my hands are trembling before I bury
them in my pockets.
Above me, the stars are specks of silver paint on a charcoal canvas...
