Admiral Sir Andrew B. Cunningham, over the recommendations of senior United States admirals on how to secure Oran harbor during the North African landings in November 1942. While the British had had the opportunity to learn from three years of war with Hitler's Germany and two years of occasional military encounters with the Vichy French regime, the operational plan implemented in Oran harbor proved disastrous, particularly for the nearly four hundred men of the 3d Battalion, 6 th Armored Infantry, tasked with seizing port facilities.
